Brazilian cities have grown and grow today, without proper planning and land management, with the population solving alone their more immediate problems of housing and access to basic services. Understand of this dynamic, is necessary for the proper planning of future actions of territorial management. The aim of this study was to map the urban area of the city of Mogi Guaçu/SP-Brazil, on three different dates in the last 24 years, and make the correlation with the resident population. To this end, was made mapping of the images from the Landsat series of the years 1991, 2001 and 2015, using false-color composition (with near infrared), and correlating mapped areas with to census data. The growth of the urban area of Mogi Guaçu, in the the 24 years analised, was 61.4%, for the first period (1991-2001) of 23.1%, rising to 31.1% (2001-2015), a fact that coincides with the period of industrialization of location, having at the final study (2015), 43.86 km² of urbanized area. The population density of the city increased, but the population density of the urban area decreased. This, shows that the growth of the urban area was performed in a planned manner, that is, the emergence of neighborhoods with horizontal growth, and maintenance of green areas.
